以科幻、恐怖电影以及电视节目作为评奖对象的年度电影大奖——第27届土星奖（27th Saturn Awards）颁奖典礼隆重登场。吸引众多明星加盟的《X战警》（X-Men）一举囊括了“最佳科幻片”、“最佳男主角”（休·杰克曼）、“最佳导演”、“最佳女配角”、“最佳剧本”和“最佳服装设计”在内的6项大奖，独占头。
Saturn Awards是一个由科幻、奇幻及恐怖电影学院（Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films）举办的年度影视奖项，每年颁发不同的奖项给该年最佳的科幻、奇幻及恐怖电影及电视剧。土星奖创立于1972年，旨在奖励和推进当年电影及电视领域的科幻类及恐怖类佳作，以及有突破和创新意义的优秀作品。
改编自美国20世纪70年代最著名的科幻漫画《X战警》，曾拿下1亿美元的票房，虽然有评论称该片情节过于空洞、表演过于呆板，但这并没有影响它在电脑特效上的非常表现。该片的主要挑战者《透明人》则获得了“最佳特效”奖。新线影业的青春恐怖片《绝命终结站》（Final Destination）获得“最佳恐怖片”奖，而该片主角德文·萨瓦则获得“最佳年轻男主角”奖。影片《黑洞频率》（频率）获得“最佳幻想片”奖。
中国导演李安的《卧虎藏龙》再度以出色的武打设计获得“最佳动作/惊险片”奖，而日本动画大师宫崎骏的《幽灵公主》则被授予“最佳影像”奖，它们的成功再次证明了亚洲电影近年来的不凡实力。
