乔治·罗伊·希尔，1922年生于美国明尼阿波利斯。在耶鲁大学攻读作曲，并获得博士学位1963年他正式从影，第一部导演作品是舞台剧改编的《 Period of Adjustment 》，后来又执导了《 Toys in the Attic 》(1963)，《 The World of Henry Orient 》(1964)，《Hawaii》(1966)。但都不大理想，直到1969年导演《Butch Cassidy and the Sundace Kid 》，使他一鸣惊人，轰动全世界，一跃成了大导演。之后与保罗·纽曼、罗伯特·雷德福合作的《骗中骗》更是囊获了当届奥斯卡多项大奖！

1974年导演的《刺激》，堪称是他怀古作品的最高峰，此片夺得了包括最佳导演奥斯卡最佳影片奖的许多奥斯卡金像奖。他一直拍比较有商业性的作品。
