张元动，男，1987年毕业于长春地质学院地质系，1987、1993年在中国科学院南京地质古生物研究所分别获博士学位，后留所工作。1994年任副研究员，1998年12月起任研究员，2001年起任博士生导师。现任中国科学院南京地质古生物研究所研究员。
近年来访问加拿大、英国、德国、瑞典、挪威、阿根廷等国，与多国学者有密切的合作研究。1996-1997年在西安大略大学地球科学系访问，2000-2002年在德国柏林工业大学应用地球科学系访问（马普学者）。主要从事早古生代地层及棒形孔笔石动物研究，在奥陶系全球界线层型、奥陶纪泥盆纪笔石系统学研究、笔石动物微细结构、奥陶纪生物大辐射等方面有突出成果，是我国第一个‘金钉子’—奥陶系达瑞威尔阶全球界线层型的第一研究骨干。
现任国际奥陶系分会通讯委员、国际志留系分会通讯委员、国际笔石工作组组织委员、《地层学杂志》副主编、《古生物学报》和《中国古生物志》编委等职。目前主持国家973项目课题“早古生代海洋动物群的形成与早期演化”、国家自然科学基金重点项目“奥陶纪生物大辐射的型式、过程和机制研究—以华南为例证”、中国科学院创新工程方向性项目“中国古生代重要层段综合地层学及精细对比研究”及中石化海相地层前瞻性项目“中国早古生代海相地层对比”等项目。迄今为止已发表论文60余篇，其中SCI论文15篇。
曾获中国科学院院长奖学金优秀奖（1994）、中国科学院自然科学二等奖（1998）、第二届“江苏青年科学家奖”（1999）、“中国科学院优秀博士后”（1999）、江苏省有突出贡献的中青年专家（2004）、中国地质学会“中国地质学会青年地质科技奖”（2005）等。
